Hear how they accumulated wealth through plunder and conquest. Fasten yourself a trusty axe and shield then engage in the delicate art of shield warfare. Be reborn with your own Viking name and learn about their cuisine, customs and society.

Ages 5-13

Learning Outcomes:

-Develop knowledge, skills and understanding in making prop replicas and other creative works informed by investigations and sources on the topic of Viking history and customs. 

-Use expressive forms to communicate ideas

-Appreciate personal creative outcomes and those of others-Collaborate with others by taking on roles and creating imagined situations informed Viking history and customs. 

-Engage in the delicate art of shield warfare. Be reborn with your own Viking name and learn about their cuisine, customs and society.

Activities:

  • Arrival, registration, meet and greet. Facilitator has a talk about who the Vikings were and sets the scene.
  • (Depending on venue) Participants create a Viking village/or Viking Ship (As the children choose) from 800AD with recyclable cardboard and rags. They create and wear costumes. Think about what their Viking names would be create characters and stories themed around the Viking era.
  • Using wood canvas, foam, found objects/recyclables and paints participants create and personalize their own Viking Shield and axe. Develop aesthetic/technical skills while appreciating function of the prop and its contribution the story. These are for the participants to take home and are personalized with the participants own interpretations of the content/sources/references and their own personal self-expression.
  • While the axes and shields are drying the facilitator tells Tales of Thor and Viking belief and myth. How Viking society was organized. Competition: Thor’s Drinking competition.
  • Group problem solving/dramatization. The horde has left to go Viking off in the West. Participants consult their map to decide where they will go. How they will navigate a Viking boat using a sunstone and sun compass and Raven. Participants imagine that they are lost and how they would use these items to find land and navigate. Participants must use cooperation, problem solving and improvisation to resolve the conflict in the story and survive the journey in a dramatic performance! Create a Saga, poem or song about the event and share it with the horde.
  • Facilitator carries out demonstration of how these axes and shields were used and utilized. Participants practice movements and working together to create a shield wall. Use the newfound skills to push back the English and loot their valuables!
  • If time/Willing participants can participate in Rune Stone Making where they can create their own rune set using flat stones and poscas. 
  • Packing up and pick up. Demonstrations to parents in full costume and creations from the day.
